Boxes, Boxes, Boxes

No, I'm not talking about 'moving boxes' , but just really neat wooden boxes-one of my favorite things to collect. They are the hardest thing for me to pass up when I see them. I don't know why, but there is just something about a wooden box that makes me want to jump for joy! Well, if the price is right. New or old, painted or not, clean or dirty...I just absolutely love them! I have even bought wooden boxes that were decorated (sort of tacky) and took the stuff off or out of them-just to have the box. I have bought 2 boxes in the past week that were really good deals, and took a picture to show them. Then I started thinking about other boxes I have that I just couldn't pass up, so I took a few more pics...
The box on the left is one I bought last night at Tractor Supply Co. I needed something to put my taters and onions in on my bakers rack and this was PERFECT! If anyone has a TS around, they have all their fall decorations on clearance at 70 percent off! Originally this box was $22.99 and I got it for $6.89!!! It's nice and sturdy, very well made and has handles cut out on the sides. They had a smaller one priced lower, but I can't remember what it said on the front plate....I may have to go back and get it, just because! They had all kinds of wooden fall decoartions but THIS was a BOX! The box on the right is one I bought at Value City when I was shopping w/my MIL last weekend. I thought it was too kewl and would be perfect to hot cocoa in for on that table in the kitchen. If I get around to it, I may make a batch of the hot cocoa powder and put it in a mason jar and put a jar of mini marshmallows in the box too. I did that last year w/another box.
Okay, this isn't a box, but I got it at TS also. I paid $3.89 for it to hang by my back door. It's a little tacky, but we have chickens and I loved the rusty washboard part. I could take it apart even if I wanted to...lol Yeah, the walls inside the little porch look like that...I was trying to strip the old paint, but it is soooo cracked and thick that I wasn't having much luck as you can see. And it's too bumpy to paint over, it would just cause more mess. We decided it would be easier to just cover over them w/new plywood and paint it. The rest of the house is vinyl sided, but they didn't do inside the porch there. On to more boxes...

This was the first box I bought after we got married. I think it cost $5.00 or something...I don't decorate w/ cabin in the woods kind of theme but I really liked the duck on the box! It just sang to me from the shelf at the store, so I had to buy it!

This box sits on my craft table...it doesn't really have a use right now. Last year it was the hot cocoa box on the table in the kitchen. Yes, there are scribbles on the wall there! lol This is the room I have to get painted before Christmas! Back to the box....I found it at a little store down the hill that I love to browse through. I have bought other boxes there, well, I guess they are actually long drawers from cabinets that I use as boxes. I didn't take pics of those. My long drawer was hanging on the wall and was used as a shelf before I painted the dining room last year. Right now, it is just sitting on top of the cabinet in the bathroom.
Well the jack'0 lantern isn't really a box...but kind of. My mom picked some of these up a few years ago and we let the boys paint them. I think they need a little primmin' up now!
Here are a few other box-type things I love. The old drawer is one my mom had sitting in her dining room and she was planning on hanging it on the wall. After months of seeing it sitting on the floor, I suggested she let me take it off her hands! The tote on the table was a gift from my husband...he finally (after years!) figured out that the only place he needs to shop for me is at the little store down the hill! lol I told him,"If it's old and it's wooden, I'll love it!" Christmas' and birthdays have been much happier for me since then! lol
Well, that is all for the box show today. As I was sitting here, I was thinking of all the other boxes that I have that I forgot to take pictures of. But they will have to wait for another day.

A few pictures of Christmas Past...

I was looking through pictures today, and found some great Christmas ones that I thought I would share. This is one of my all-time favorite pictures I took of the boys...It was in 2000, way back before digial cameras (before I had one anyway). I was so thrilled when I picked up my developed pictures and saw this one! It is beautiful with the snow falling and the lights lit on the tree. Calvin was 5 and Brady was 3 1/2 here.

And of course we always take a silly picture of the babies at Christmas time. They love that now don't they? We dress them in Santa hats- this is Calvin...he was 3 months old at Christmas in 1995:
Brady was 8 months old for his first Christmas in 1997

I can't forget Gannon on his first Christmas in 2002. He was a bit over 2 months old. Right Jolly Old Elf, he was. (wow, was my hair dark!)

And well, sometimes Christmas wasn't always a happy occasion...not when you are 4 and don't want to leave Grandma's house. Brady had a little tantrum and I think he fell asleep here by the door. Sometimes they wear the Santa hat- just because.

And this last picture is one I will always treasure...it is the first visit with Santa for Gannon, and Calvin and Brady still whole-heartedly believed in the magic of Christmas....now they are pre-teens and not so much believing anymore. He was the BEST looking Santa we ever went to see.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

From Pretty to Prim!

Was it pretty? Um...it wasn't so much anymore. And is it prim? Well, it's well on it's way!

I made this barbed wire crow wreath and outhouse sign years ago and they have been hanging outside my bath ever since. I think they fit perfectly on that small wall (yeah, the NEXT room desperately in need of re-painting! I'll be getting to that soon!). The barbed wire is from the fence line along the driveway, and the piece of wood is one I found and it just said 'I am an arrow sign' to me, so I cut the ends (left the old nails in it-one above the U and one right at the top corner of the E) and painted me a sign. I had no idea where it was going to go at the time, I just know I saw tons of them online and I had to have one! I thought it may go in the kitchen so it would point the way to the bathroom for guests, but when I decided this wall needed something, luckily, I had cut and painted it the right way to hang beside the bathroom door. Unfortunately, I have that alot....unplanned-dumb-luck when I am making things! Okay, you got a peek at my shower curtain, so that is the next view:

Okay, this is not what I really wanted the picture to look like...the sun is WAY too bright this morning to get a good picture- but you get the idea. The flooring DEFINATELY has to go now. TOO much pattern going on! lol But this is what happened- I was looking for a certain pattern in a shower curtain, but the store I went to did not have one in...and maybe lucky for me. They had the pattern in curtains, but had the shower curtains on order and they would have taken 2 weeks to come in. I compared my paint sample to the curtains they had, and was not sure at all if it would go with what I was currently painting on my walls in there. I actually wanted something close to the black checked placemat on the back of the toilet in the picture. Anyhow, I was in a bit of a time-crunch (as you probably could tell from my post that day!) so I picked out this shower curtain. The lady informed me that they did not have matching window treatments for it, and I decided I would just pick one out in a plain color that would match. No biggie-except I discovered when I got home that I totally forgot to get one! I was too busy making sure I had gotten all 6 sets of curtains that I needed for in the kitchen and in the correct sizes that the valance for the bathroom just slipped my mind! It was okay- my bill was high enough as it was! But there I was in the middle of painting and trying to get everything else put together for my MIL's visit and had no time to go back to the stores to get something for the window in there. My solution? I pulled out 3 plain, muslin colored, dish towels I had bought to stitch on and hung them over the rod! It really didn't turn out bad for a quick fix, and my MIL had no idea until I told her! lol Actually, in looking around for some kind of rug to go on the floor, I found that I have one in the same colors as the shower curtain- just in stripes! It's on the floor in the pic, but needs washed now- nothing light colored stays clean for long w/these 3 boys and 3 puppies! BUT I do have another one ( I found them at a great price so I picked up 2) so it will be nice to be able to swap them out for washing. I didn't get my shutters done either, but hope to get them done and up before Don sees what I am doing! He is not going to like them- they will be black and primitive! They should cover the bottom half of the window. I am really leaning toward black accessories in there, so I am sort of glad I didn't hold out for the black checked shower curtain. I really don't like everything being matchy-matchy anyhow. Here is the picture I took of the sink area:

VERY plain for now. I plan on making a shelf for under the mirror (yeah, that is the cheapie I bought the other day- I didn't find another so I kept it for in there- for now), in black of course, and have it drawn up on the wood, but need to get it cut and put together. The wood is from a small, unfinished end table (?) that I picked up at yard sale for a few bucks. There were 2 of them (both for $4 I think) and one seemed like they made it right, the other seemed like they messed up on measurements and so they gave up on both. I pulled the messed up one apart and it should make a right-nice shelf for in there. Now the cupboards....I want to paint them BLACK too! But that DEFINATELY has to be done when I KNOW Don won't see what I am doing- he would never go for me painting over finished wood! I am nervous just thinking about it, myself! They are starting to show a bit of wear and will need refinished anyway, so why not in black? I just keep thinking I need more stuff on the walls- and looking around for things I can make for in there! I thought about painting some frames black and hanging 3x5 pics of my boys taking baths (as babies w/ nothing showing!) down the right side of the mirror. I would print them up in black and white or sepia...Maybe I'll have to go ahead and try it to see what it would look like. The last picture, again, is not a good one for showing colors...the walls are actually a nice tan- Natural Bark I think is the name (from Walmart). That darn morning sun! lol I took pictures in my kitchen to show you my new curtains in there, but it was soooo bright that it made my walls look like a lemon-y yellow! yuck. So that will be a picture for another time...tomorrow possibly.

OH! I have a tip for those of you who do your own wall or furniture painting! While you are painting (and the paint is good and mixed), take a baby food jar, canning jar or any other tight sealing jar or container and pour some of your paint in it. Label the jar with the color name, paint brand, and what you painted with it (living room, dining room walls, side table, etc.) Seal it tightly and keep it under your kitchen sink- or anywhere else that it would be easily accessable. Whenever you need a touch-up (nail holes, dings, scratches) just pull out the appropriate jar, give it a good shake to make sure the color is fully mixed, and take a craft brush to touch up any needed areas! It sure seems to beat having to pull out large paint cans and stirring a lot of paint at one time if all you really need to do is shake up a jar!
Well, I hope I did well for a quickie makeover! I am really satisfied with what I was able to accomplish in such a short period of time, and I will enjoy adding to it as I see fit! What do you think?

No pics today...

I've been busy since I freaked out last week! lol Our visit went really well-and I knew it would, but I always freak out about it before it happens. My Mother-in-law and her friend, Miss Jean came Friday and left on Monday morning for their long trip home. We shopped, ate, laughed and giggled and had a great time. I did get the bathroom painted and got a little bit of decorating done in there, but of course, not near as much as I had hoped...which serves me right for waiting until the day before to get around to it! But it looked nice and fresh and they loved it! I tend to do more 'bold' colors than they would think of using in painting walls, but I didn't think that the color of tan I used was 'bold'. I guess if it's not white, it's just bold. Now my deep red dining room and (brighter-than-intended) gold in the kitchen are my only 'bold' colors in my house. My dh had a fit when I first started the walls in the dining room....but he really liked it when I was done. I have since re-painted the red, (it's a bit deeper than I originally had it) and probably would not change it. I have a lot of 'open space' in there with large windows and door openings, and have lighter knotty pine paneling on the bottom half, so the red goes well and does not darken the room. I was intending on posting pictures today, but my camera is obviously in desperate need of new batteries...grrrr.... I didn't know until I went to snap a pic of my new kitchen curtains and it wouldn't take. So, I guess I'll just have to pick some up in the morning when I am leaving work. Hopefully I can get pictures on here tomorrow. Till then....
