I have several pictures to show today. Mostly about Nature. I am undecided about Her (meaning Mother Nature)…
I’ll start with Saturday. I took this one early in the morn of Mama and her babies…morning sun really rocks a pic!
She did, in fact, have 10 babies. I was able to get a few pictures that allowed me to actually count them. She was a little more brave on day 2 of Motherhood and was leading them around the yard.
I threw some bread out for her to lead them to.
They were happily eating away at it. It was so cute to watch them run after bugs in the grass too, and try to get them :) Totally adorable.
It’s been cold here. Like highs in the 50’s kind of cold. And windy! It rained off and on Saturday afternoon. When I was in the kitchen getting dinner started, we were getting another blow through shower and I kind of noticed the sun was coming out. I thought to myself, ‘ I wonder if there is going to be a rainbow?’ Just then I turned around to look, and I was almost blinded by the sight!
That was the brightest rainbow I have ever seen! It literally hurt your eyes to look at it too long…but how could you not? That darn pot of gold was just down the hill from us! lol Never saw on THAT close before. The other end of it was beautiful as well…loved it against the dark clouds in the background.
So on to Mother’s Day. I had to work in the morning, but the boys made me cookies (um…diet? lol) and we were going to stop and pick out some flowers, but I didn’t feel like it. They cleaned up the house though…a plus. And then Hubs made steaks on the grill, which I didn’t eat. Yeah…diet. lol After I was home for a little while, I asked the boys if they had counted the babies yet that day. They told me that Mama had walked away from the pond with them and they hadn’t seen her all day! Sigh….so much for babies. Brady later came into the house and told me that he could hear one in the well back on the hill. It’s covered with a big old grinding stone and I knew I couldn’t move it. I told him he would have to wait until his dad got home. Nope. That wouldn’t do. He went and enlisted the help of the brothers, and they launched a rescue mission to retrieve it!
Trying to decide how to pry the stone off…
It took a little prying and tugging, but they slid it off far enough to reach down in…
Success! (after a few trips down to the garage for another shovel, a piece of board, and a butterfly net with a handle- that was where Gannon came in handy…he was the go-for)
They were proud of their rescue mission :)
He is a sweet little ball of fuzz. But I told myself I would not get attached. When Mama came back (undoubtedly baby-less), we would release him back to her. She did not return last night. That’s why I think Mother Nature can be a beast. Apparently Mama felt her babies were better off somewhere else, and I just hope even a few made it to her destination. I spent some time snuggling with this one while watching t.v. There is nothing quite like a baby duck…
(Calvin was holding him in the first 2 pics…I had a red uniform on from work, but those weren’t my dirty hands! lol)
Gannon took his turn snuggling….his shirt is filthy! lol Boys…
We set him up in a big box with shredded newspaper,a pan of water, some bread, and I put a light on him for heat. I wasn’t too hopeful for him…we’ve tried this in the past- without success. And he was alone :( This morning, he seemed okay. He seemed to be in the exact spot he was in when I went to bed. He was alive, but I didn’t know how long he would last. I came home from work and he still seemed fine. Still in the same spot, though. I did a few things around the house and went to pick him up to snuggle with him and his underside was wet! So he has been drinking and he had been in the water. So far so good. I am getting attached to this sweet thing. My client asked me what we named him and I really didn’t expect him to live, so I hadn’t thought about it. I’m tempted to call him Timmy. Anyone know why I would do that? *wink*

I am guessing that you are now the Mommie to Tiny Tim (am I right). It is always hard to try and keep the little wild animals alive that have no Mommie..I tried it with baby Raccoons many years ago and I guess I loved them to death.Animal control told me to bring them there and they would uthanize (how ever you spell it) because it was against the law to have wildlife in your home..I told them I could throw them out in the road if I wanted to kill them and if they wanted to they couls come and arrest me LOL
I found a book about baby Raccoons but it was to late by the time I got it.
I hope your cute little duckie lives and decides he wants you for a Mommie :)
What a cute little baby and I bet the mom decided the well was a danger and took her babies somewhere else. I doubt she went far though and she may be back. They generally stay in the same area.

For the past 8 years we have had baby ducks. One year 22 of them fuzz balls. Well you know life happens and most all of them have a short life. We started taking them from mama duck and had better luck with the count. We feed them starter food we get at Tractor Supply. I keep one dish with warm water the other with warm water and food mushed up. They are messy little eaters. A kittey litter pan with shallow water makes a nice make do pond too. I have left them take a swim in my garden pond from time to time. We put them in a bunny hutch while little. Have not counted eggs yet but Mama is on her nest. Good luck with Timmy!
