We Have Babies :)

Our mama duck has diligently been sitting on her nest and the babies hatched today!

Our ducks aren’t very vocal, so we really don’t hear them very much.  When they are out and flying about, they will quack away as they fly in circles around our yard and also when they are coming in for a splashy landing on the pond.  Hubs and I were in the kitchen and heard a lot of commotion going on.  We looked out the window and saw several ducks circling the yard and when they finally landed, one male was going after Mama (a.k.a Girlfriend), for, well, you know…  We thought it was strange b/c it’s been quite awhile since we’ve seen another duck in the yard besides Mama and her boyfriend, and were watching them when Hubs pointed out the pile of babies right beside the pond!  I had looked out there not too long before that, but never realized what they were!  Mama was having fits b/c a stranger was too close to the babies, and she wrestled him off and scared him away.

I had to take my camera down to the garage to get closer pictures.  That made her nervous and she took the babies across the pond- but still plenty close enough for me!

Get your ducks in a row…

She had her eye on me the whole time I was taking pictures out the garage window.  Aren’t they the cutest fluff balls?  I’m still trying to count them…there are 8-10 of them.  I thought I counted 9 of them once or twice, but it’s hard to tell.  They all blend together or hide behind or under her.  I can’t say that I would love for them to all make it- ducks are really messy on the pond (a few would be fine!), but I know the hard truth…the laws of nature won’t allow it.  She has had a few hatchings over the years, and eventually the numbers dwindle down to 2 or 3- if any at all.  It’s sad, and we have tried capturing babies before and hand raising them, but they never seem to make it that way either, and that’s even more heartbreaking (we’ve raised baby chicks before, so it’s not like we don’t know what we are doing).  They are so, so cute, and I will just have to be content to enjoy them while I can.

If I don’t get back to posting before, I want to wish you all a Happy Mother’s Day!

(and Happy Mother’s Day to Mama, too!)
